KDHE Waste Tire Grant

KDHE Waste Tire Grant

About the Program

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) Waste Tire Grant Program supports projects that promote the beneficial reuse of recycled tire materials throughout Kansas. The program helps communities, schools, parks, and other organizations incorporate recycled tire products into public improvement projects while reducing the number of waste tires entering landfills or illegal disposal sites.

Waste tires can be processed and recycled into a variety of useful products, including:

  • Playground borders and surfacing
  • Landscaping materials
  • Athletic and recreational surfaces
  • Walking trails
  • Rubber mulch and safety surfacing
  • Construction and infrastructure materials

The goal of the program is to encourage environmentally responsible recycling practices while providing durable and cost-effective materials for public use projects.

Through grant funding assistance, communities are able to complete projects that improve public facilities, enhance safety, and support sustainability efforts. Recycled tire products are designed to be long-lasting, low maintenance, and resistant to weathering and decay, making them a practical option for parks and outdoor spaces.

Additional information about waste tire recycling and KDHE environmental programs can be found through the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

Impact in Alta Vista

The City of Alta Vista was proud to participate in the KDHE Waste Tire Grant Program SFY-2025 through improvements completed at City Park using recycled rubber mulch.

This project was funded in part through the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) Waste Tire Grant Program. The City of Alta Vista received grant funding to support the purchase and installation of recycled tire mulch that will improve public spaces while promoting environmental sustainability.

The recycled rubber mulch installed at the park provides several benefits, including:

  • Long-lasting and durable park infrastructure
  • Improved safety and appearance of park areas
  • Reduced maintenance needs compared to traditional materials
  • Beneficial reuse of recycled tires that might otherwise enter landfills

The total project cost was $7,139, with 50% funded through KDHE grant assistance and 50% funded through matching funds provided by the City of Alta Vista.

By using recycled tire products in public projects, the City of Alta Vista is helping support responsible recycling practices and encouraging environmentally friendly solutions within the community.
